Dragon's Breath
Cornucopia Tutorial

The Cornucopia or horn of plenty is a symbol used during Thanksgiving to represent abundance.  I wanted to decorate some graphics with them, but I could not find any tubes or tutorials.  So I created my own tutorial.

I claim the copyright to this tutorial.  You are free to do whatever you please with the cornucopia you make (except make money from it), but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

I consider this tutorial for intermediate to advanced level.

This tutorial uses selections that I have made.  Click on the link to download the zipped file of the selections, then unzip into a separate folder.  This zipped file also contains the weave pattern and some fruit and vegetable tubes.

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 7.0 .  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

1.  To begin open up the weave file in Paint Shop Pro.  Click on flood
tool (paint can).  Click on foreground styles box, change to patterns,
and choose the weave pattern, scale 50%, angle 60.  (see pictures
below)  Then minimize the weave background.  We will use it to fill
     the selections.

2.  Open a new file, 400 by 400, 72 resolution, transparent background,
     16.7 million colors.

3.  Click on Selections, load from disk.  Look in the folder that you
saved the selections to, and open up cornlayer1.sel    Flood the
selection with the weave pattern.  Then click on Effects, 3D Effects,
Inner Bevel.  In drop down menu, choose Pillow preset.  Use the
default settings, or if you don't have the pillow preset, then use the
settings in the example below.  Click ok.

Example:  Pillow Preset for Inner Bevel

4.   On same layer, load cornlayer2.sel from disk.  Flood the selection
with the weave pattern.  Use same Inner Bevel as in Step 3.

5.  Repeat the steps in #4 for each of the selections for cornlayer3
     through cornlayer 11.

6.  Click Layers, new raster layer.

7.  Load cornlayer12.sel from disk.  Flood the selection with the weave
pattern.  Then click on Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel.  In drop
down menu, choose Clover preset.  Click ok.

8.  Click Layers, new raster layer.  Load cornlayer13.sel from disk.  Flood
the selection with the weave pattern.  Then click on Effects, 3D
Effects, Inner Bevel.  In drop down menu, choose Bead preset.  Click
     ok.

9.  While it is still selected, click Color, adjust, brightness/contrast.  Set
brightness to -60 and contrast to 0.  Click ok. Deselect.

Now you are ready to decorate your cornucopia.  (If you do not want to decorate, then skip to Step   15.)  You may use any tubes that you like, but I provided a few in the zip file that you downloaded.

10.  Go to Layers Palette and right-click on Layer 2. Choose New Raster
       Layer.

11.  Click on Layer 4 in Layers Palette.  Add some fruit and or vegetable
tubes to your picture.  These will be the fruit inside of the horn.

12.  Then turn off layers 1, 3, and 4 by clicking on the glasses next to
those layers. Choose the magic wand tool and click on the blank
       area of Layer 2.

13.  Click on Layer 4 in Layers Palette.  Click delete.  The fruit that
extended beyond the cornucopia should have been deleted.

14.  Right-click on Layer 3 in Layers Palette.  Add a new raster layer.
Decorate with fruits and vegetables.  These will be the fruits that
       flow out of the horn.

15.  Click on Layers, Merge, Merge visible.  And save.  Resize and make
       into a tube.

And there you have it!  Your own Horn of  Plenty.
