Rooster Tutorial

I claim the copyright to this tutorial.  You are free to do whatever you please with the rooster you make (except make money from it), but please do not take my tutorial.  Do not send the tutorial through email.  Only share my link.

I assume you have some basic understanding of PSP tools.  I consider this tutorial for intermediate to advanced level, but I included some graphics so that maybe beginners can follow it.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. 

This tutorial uses selections that I have made.  Click on the link to download the zipped file of the selections, then unzip into a separate folder. 

To do this tutorial you will also need Paint Shop Pro.  I used Paint Shop Pro 7.0 .  You may download a free trial at Jasc.

This tutorial also uses Eye Candy 3.1--Fur plugin.

Remember to save as a psp file often!

1.  To begin, open a new file, 319 by 500, 72 resolution, transparent background, 
     16.7 million colors.

2.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Find the folder where you saved the selections, 
     and choose roosterbody.sel.  Click ok.

3.  Click on the Paint can (flood fill)  icon on the left side.  Click on the foreground 
     color box and change it to color #AA7C34.  Then with the paint can left-click inside 
     the roosterbody selection and flood it with that color.

4.  While still selected, click on Effects--Plugins--Eye Candy 3.1--Fur.  Change to these 
     settings:  Wave spacing = 104, Waviness = 16, hair length = 3, shininess =22, turn 
     on smooth.  Click ok/apply.

5.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roosterwing.sel.  Click ok.

6.  Click on Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -20 (negative 
     20), and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

7.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Find the folder where you saved the selections, 
     and choose roosterbody_shadow.sel.  Click ok.  Click on Colors-- Adjustments-- 
     Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -50 (negative 50), and contrast = 0.  Click 
     ok.

8.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save as PSP file

9.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostercrown.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with paint can set to foreground color = #C00000

10.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostertail1.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #674A03.

11.  Click on Effects--3D Effects--Drop Shadow.  Apply these settings:  horizontal and 
     vertical = 2, opacity = 60, blur = 10, Color = black (#000000)

12.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostertail2.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #674A03.  Click on Colors-- Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set 
     Brightness = 10, and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

13.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostertail3.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #674A03.  Click on Colors-- Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set 
     Brightness = 20, and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

14.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostertail_shadow.sel.  Click ok.  Click 
     on Colors-- Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = 10, and contrast 
     = 0.  Click ok.

15.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save.

16.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roosterfeet.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #FCC672.

17.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roosterfeet_shadow.sel.  Click ok.  Click 
     on Colors-- Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast.  Set Brightness = -15 (negative 15), 
     and contrast = 0.  Click ok.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose 
     roosterfeetshadow2.sel.  Click ok.  Click on Colors--Adjustments--Brightness/ 
     Contrast.  Set Brightness = 15, and contrast = 0.  Click ok.

18.  Click on Layers--Add New Raster Layer.  Save.

19.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostertoes.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #DEC9A8.

20.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roosterbeak.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #F0BF14.

22.  Go to Selections--Load from disk.  Choose roostereye.sel.  Click ok.  Flood Fill 
     with #000000 (black).

23.  Click on Effects--3D Effects--Inner Bevel.  Apply these settings:  pie-shape, 
     width = 14, smoothness = 15, depth =12, ambience = 0, shininess = 50, 
     color = white, angle = 17, intensity = 50, elevation = 30

24.  Click on Layers--Merge--Merge Visible, and save.
